The Easiest Credit Report Repair Steps

January 27th, 2010

Things are happening in this economy that are going to impact many people’s credit scores whether they like it or not. Specifically, the banks are reducing credit card limits, raising interest rates, and changing payment terms so that monthly payments are larger than ever before. On top of this, people are losing jobs, or suffering under health care difficulties, so credit scores for many are also taking a hit. Credit report repair does take some time, as there are really no quick fixes (despite what scammers might tell you). However, if you follow some simple steps for at least a few months, you can start to see improved credit score within as little as two or three months.

Late payments are likely the main reason your credit is poor. So first, you have to make a committment to pay all of your debts on time. If you’re not able to make the minimum payments on everything by their due date, you should try to earn some extra income to get additiona funds to bring your debts current. Otherwise, you will need to use debt negotiation efforts with your creditors to arrange payments that will work for you. Until your debt is current, your credit score will not improve.

Something else which is also often overlooked are errors on your credit report. You should get rid of any errors that lower your score, for example incorrect collections records, someone else’s credit (sometimes relatives can show up on your report) and other mistakes. Once these get fixed, it can have an almost immediate impact on your credit.

Once you get your payments all up to date, and you’re sure your credit report has no errors, you can start to reduce your debt balances. One item that contributes to bad credit is having too many cards open, with high balances on all of them. Start by paying more than the minimum monthly payment on the card with the lowest balance. This will save you interest payments, and also get it paid off faster. Then take that total monthly payment you were paying on that card, and apply it to the card with the next lowest balance. This is called a “debt snowball” and will help you reduce your debt faster than if you paid the minimums, improve your credit and save a bundle in interest payments over time.

These are the two basic simple steps toward credit report repair that you can start today. By sticking to making payments on time on a regular basis, your credit score will begin to improve without a doubt.

How To Repair Your Credit – Fast!

December 12th, 2009

Figuring out how to repair your credit is always a good idea if you currently have a bad credit score. Without bad credit, having to wait a year or more before you see credit improvement can seem like it’s taking forever. But learning how to repair your credit score is actually pretty easy – just a few steps can repair your credit quickly, so that can begin to see improvement in only a couple months. When you know how to repair your own credit, you an continue taking steps and see your scores improve without spending a lot of money, and even for free.

To start any program for repairing your credit history, you have to start by knowing what your credit looks like today. You can get a free credit report, and review it from there, but you also might want to see your credit report plus credit scores, which you usually have to pay for. When you subscribe to a service that gives you credit scores, it’s an easy way to keep track of the improvement you’ll see in your credit score as you start learning more about how to repair your credit yourself. Usually basic credit score services are as little as under $10 per month and you can often cancel at any time. But you don’t need your scores to start fixing credit, you probably already know you have a low score if you are past due or have a lot of unpaid debt. Maybe you’ll want to check your credit score at the beginning of your credit repair program, but then not get another credit score report for a few months, after you’ve taken some action.

Where is the best place to start to fix credit? The absolute most important item thing you must do now is bring your bills current, and start paying them all bills on time. Even if you debt is large, and bringing everything current is a lot of money, do everything you can to raise a few extra bucks and pay up. Sell some things online, get a part time job, stop buying fast food, and put the extra money toward your overdue bills. Once you bring your debt current, then start paying every bill on time. If you can’t afford your monthly payments we’ll discuss more on that below. But even if you have had a bad payment history in the past, just by doing these two things you could start to see improvements in your credit score within just a couple months.

Another thing you should consider is to close out some of the credit card accounts you have open. Some people say that closing accounts can hurt your FICO score. But if you have too many credit cards available to you, that can hurt your score too. It’ better to have a few accounts with balances that re under 50% of the total debt limit, instead of multiple accounts sitting there. Close some and that will also remove temptation from you possibly running up ore debt.

Most credit reporting agencies will say that once you take some steps to clean up your credit, it can take 60-90 days to show up on your credit report, since some update at the end of the month. If you are diligent about fixing your past due accounts, and reducing debt, then you will see improvement in 3-6 months. It’s hard to get around that unless you use means that are illegal or illegitimate – don’t fall for credit scams that say they can get you clean credit immediately. Sometimes you just have to be patient for three months until a change shows up that will positively affect your credit score.

What about people who have such bad credit that there is over a year or more of negative credit history? If this sounds like you, you might want to consider more serious steps. If you just can’t make your credit payments, then it’s possibly you should consider bankruptcy. A rule of thumb is: If your debt if more than your annual gross salary or wages, then it will take you a very long time to dig out of the debt hole especially as credit card companies now are raising interest rates and fees. This is when you might consider bankruptcy.

Once your credit has been negative for a year or more, filing for bankruptcy will not affect your credit history or credit score much for the worse. Lenders already see the past seven years of your credit history when making a decision, and your bad credit history will already cause problems even without a bankruptcy. One you file for bankruptcy, it may help you get back on your feet and have a chance to start over. (Remember, however that certain debts cannot be wiped out by bankruptcy, such as child support payments or student loans.)

It can be expensive however to file for bankruptcy. While many bankruptcy lawyers will give you a free consultation for a half hour or an hour, you will have to pay a retainer fee of $2,000 or more before they will file your paperwork. They should also talk with you to see if in fact bankruptcy is the right path for you to take. Just be wary of any lawyer that tries to rush you into filing bankruptcy – you always have options.

Will a credit counseling agency help you with how to repair your credit rating? It’s debatable. First, watch out for credit services that claim to improve your credit score by 100 or more points in just a month or two. This is virtually impossible to do legally. Also, they may charge you high fees, or a big percentage of the monthly payments you’re making. that said, some non-profit counseling agencies will help you for free. But be aware that many of these agencies are financially supported by the credit card industry, and will encourage you not to file bankruptcy but to pay your debts, even if that isn’t the right option for you. They will also be mainly concerned with getting you to pay your credit card debt but won’t help so much with late car or house payments or rent.

Another little known fact is that while they are telling you how to repair your credit score, they wont’ tell you that just using their service will hurt your credit score! That’s right – registration with their credit counseling agency, and entering into a repayment plan, will show up on your credit report, and many lenders treat this just like a bad credit mark and will not give you credit! So it doesn’t really help you if your goal is just to improve your credit report.

The bottom line is that if you are trying to learn how to repair your credit, there is plenty of information available to you to do it yourself. You don’t need to pay high fees, or hire a lawyer right away. You can take steps for how to repair your credit quickly once you see improvement you’ll be motivated to stick with your credit repair program.

Finding My Free Credit Report Online

November 8th, 2009

In a good economy and with good credit, buying a car or even getting a simple store credit card is usually simple. In a bad economy, it can be a nightmare. With only a few issues on your report, you may not get the credit you need or want. You need to know what these reports are in fact saying about you. If you’re worrying about “how can I find my free credit report online” – don’t!

You can’t wait too long, though. Standing in the showroom taking pictures of your new car is not the time to find out you can’t get the loan approved. Find out ahead of time whether or not your new car is a dream or reality.

Until a few years ago credit reports cost about $25 a piece. Within the past few years, however, depending on where you live, almost all consumers are entitled to get one free credit report each year. The problem with this is that it could take forever to get it in the mail!

There are ways around this, though. The three credit bureaus, along with many new companies that provide this type of service, have various types of plans where you can pay a monthly fee and receive not only your credit reports but additional services as well. They all will provide you with a free trial period of about a week.

If all you want is your credit report, why would you buy a monthly membership? They are hoping the additional services they offer will entice you to stay and continue paying.

If you really have no need for these other services, and all you wanted to see the credit report, you can cancel before your trial period expires. Since they bank on having people not cancel early enough, they want to make it as difficult as possible. You may get nowhere on the phone, and your emails might get ignored.

If you don’t want to continue the membership once you get your credit report, what can you do? Chances are you’ll get charged for the next month. If this happens, send supporting documentation to your credit card company explaining what happened. Make certain you send them printouts of the emails you sent to the company along with a screen print of their page that explains their free trial period. Also provide them the confirmation email you received after signing up for the free trial. Most credit card companies are happy to provide you with a credit in these circumstances, especially if the company itself won’t do anything for you.

How To Obtain A Copy Of Credit Report

October 1st, 2009

One of the benefits of being an American citizen is that each year we get a little gift in the form of a free copy of credit report. Instead of having to plunk down the five to ten bucks it used to cost per copy, we can get one free annually. We can thank the government for passing the 2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act and giving us our little bonus.

Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are the three major credit reporting agencies in the U. S. They are each now required to provide every person who asks annually for their credit report a free one every year. They are also required to use one central source. It contains a site on the internet, a postal address and a telephone number.

The one major thing to remember is that you do not just get your free copy of credit report sent to you. You must actually request the credit report. There are three ways by which you can do this.

The centralized source has a brochure about the free credit report policy. On the back of this, there is a form that you can simply fill out and send in.

Remember that telephone number mentioned earlier at the centralized source? Well, that is your second option. Just give it a call to request for your credit report.

If you look back at the requirements of the centralized source, you may note that it must have a website. So, of course, you can submit your report request online. Some people have built sites that are only one or two letters different than the one official site. Be wary and check that you are at the correct place. If they try to charge you, it is a false site.

In total, you are allowed three reports. Remember that each agency must provide you with one. When placing your request, you may choose to do one at a time or all of them at once. Just be sure to use that central source as it is the only way to make absolute certain that you get the credit report free.

If you get your annual free credit report, you may think that you cannot get another one that year without paying for it. However, there are a few circumstances in which you are able to get another free report. Here are a few examples of situations in which you could get that extra report: application for unemployment or to get public assistance;you live in a state that requires free annual reports from each credit agency; or denial of a loan, job or insurance policy due to your credit.

How To Get Your Free Government Credit Report

September 29th, 2009

By law, you are entitled to one free government credit report each year, but you have to apply to get it. The consumer reporting companies are covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act to ensure privacy and accuracy.

Your credit report contains personal information like your address, your bill-paying habits, and your status as far as bankruptcy, arrest or any legal action against you. This information is of interest to companies who may be creditors, employers, insurers, lending institutions and landlords, and the consumer reporting companies sell the reports to them.

There are a few reasons why you would want a copy of your credit report. You might want to make sure the report contains accurate and factual information before you apply for a loan, for insurance or new employment, to make sure that there isn’t anything incorrectly in the report that could affect your approval chances.

Identity theft is a growing crime and checking the accuracy of your credit report helps to protect against it. If you have applied for, but been refused, credit, your credit report might hold information that was responsible.

There are currently just three nationwide companies that are credit reporting agencies, and they are contactable through a combined website, a toll-free phone number and a mail address. You can request one credit report from each company within any year. Remember, that you do have rights under the FCRA.

A good place to start is to visit the website – www. Annualcreditreport. Com, where you will find answers to any questions you might have and information as to how to apply for your report to be sent to you. You will have to fill in the usual information to identify yourself: name, birth date, address, SS number. You will need to give your past address if you have moved within the past two years. There may be extra questions asked in order to make sure you are entitled to get your report.

This is the only website legally authorized to provide your government credit report, so beware of other websites that try to lure you into giving out personal details or handing over some money. You will not need to “subscribe” to anything to get your free credit report, so any website that asks for you to “sign up” is not genuine. These websites have no access to your credit report anyway.

Under the terms of the Act, your privacy is guaranteed, so any emails or letters asking for personal details are a hoax. When you apply for your government credit report, you will not be asked for any details except for what is on the application form.
