Finding My Free Credit Report Online

November 8th, 2009

In a good economy and with good credit, buying a car or even getting a simple store credit card is usually simple. In a bad economy, it can be a nightmare. With only a few issues on your report, you may not get the credit you need or want. You need to know what these reports are in fact saying about you. If you’re worrying about “how can I find my free credit report online” – don’t!

You can’t wait too long, though. Standing in the showroom taking pictures of your new car is not the time to find out you can’t get the loan approved. Find out ahead of time whether or not your new car is a dream or reality.

Until a few years ago credit reports cost about $25 a piece. Within the past few years, however, depending on where you live, almost all consumers are entitled to get one free credit report each year. The problem with this is that it could take forever to get it in the mail!

There are ways around this, though. The three credit bureaus, along with many new companies that provide this type of service, have various types of plans where you can pay a monthly fee and receive not only your credit reports but additional services as well. They all will provide you with a free trial period of about a week.

If all you want is your credit report, why would you buy a monthly membership? They are hoping the additional services they offer will entice you to stay and continue paying.

If you really have no need for these other services, and all you wanted to see the credit report, you can cancel before your trial period expires. Since they bank on having people not cancel early enough, they want to make it as difficult as possible. You may get nowhere on the phone, and your emails might get ignored.

If you don’t want to continue the membership once you get your credit report, what can you do? Chances are you’ll get charged for the next month. If this happens, send supporting documentation to your credit card company explaining what happened. Make certain you send them printouts of the emails you sent to the company along with a screen print of their page that explains their free trial period. Also provide them the confirmation email you received after signing up for the free trial. Most credit card companies are happy to provide you with a credit in these circumstances, especially if the company itself won’t do anything for you.
